My traditional form-based knowledge test only achieved a modest completion rate of 45%. The familiar scenario: Students clicked, answered 3-4 questions, got bored, and closed the tab.
However, when I transferred all of that content to the adventure game version, that number skyrocketed to 78%.
It’s not because the questions are easier. Nor is it because the content has been reduced. The change lies in the teaching method: game-based learning (educational gamification).
In this article, I will share practical, step-by-step instructions to help you apply interactive learning, transforming a monotonous quiz into a captivating role-playing game in just 3 hours, with absolutely no programming skills required.
Where to begin: The starting point of the original quiz
I am responsible for training the “Basic Customer Service Skills” module for the new Sales team.
- Test structure: 12 multiple-choice questions divided into 4 competency groups ( Communication, Problem-solving, Product knowledge, Attitude ).
- Target audience: Young employees (22–30 years old) who are familiar with smartphones and digital experiences.
- Old format: Surveys via Google Forms. Simple, convenient, but incredibly boring.
- Previous result: Completion rate was only 45%. The students did the assignments out of obligation, not with any enthusiasm.
The goal: To retain the 12 specialized questions, but to apply educational gamification to transform them into an engaging journey that motivates learners to see it through to the end.
A 3-hour journey to transform a boring quiz into an adventure game.

Stage 3: Testing, Mobile Optimization & Official Publish

Hour 1: Game Concept Design & Scripting (60 minutes)
Step 1: Choose a Narrative Frame – 15 minutes
The core question when implementing game-based learning is: Who are the players and what journey are they embarking on?
I chose the scenario: Players take on the role of a new employee on their first day of work. To become a full-time employee, they must overcome 4 “challenges” from 4 Mentors (representing 4 knowledge areas).
- Mentor 1 (Communication): Head of Customer Service — Assessing communication skills.
- Mentor 2 (Problem-solving): Senior Advisor — A challenging problem-solving exercise.
- Mentor 3 (Product Knowledge): Product Specialist — Assessing product understanding.
- Mentor 4 (Attitude): CEO — Interviewing on attitude and culture.
Storyline Arc: Day One Challenge> Demonstrate competence -> Become a permanent employee.
Step 2: Map the questions to the checkpoints (20 minutes)
| Checkpoint | Milestone | Mentor in charge | Topic | Allocation question |
| CP 1 | 300 points | Head of Planning Department | Communication | Q1, Q2, Q3 |
| CP 2 | 600 points | Senior Advisor | Problem-solving | Q4, Q5, Q6 |
| CP 3 | 900 points | Product Specialist | Product knowledge | Q7, Q8, Q9 |
| CP 4 | 1200 points | CEO | Work attitude | Q10, Q11, Q12 |
Win Condition: Conquer all 4 checkpoints = Meet the criteria to join the team.

Step 3: Draft the Intro & Outro dialogue (25 minutes)
Each checkpoint requires two basic dialogue slides:
- Intro Dialogue: The mentor appears, welcomes you, and sets the stage for the challenge.
- Outro Dialogue: Mentors provide feedback and comments after players complete the quiz.
Example Mentor 1 scenario:
- Intro: “Good morning! I’m Linh, Head of Customer Relations. I’ll be here to observe how you listen to and communicate with customers. Feel free to show your confidence!”
- Outro: “Excellent! You know how to listen deeply — that’s a golden skill. Let’s move on to the next challenge!”
Hour 2: Create Visual Quiz Games with Octokit (90 minutes)
To create quiz games without coding, the Octokit educational platform is an extremely effective tool for instructors and trainers.
1. Setting up the gaming space (10 minutes)
- Create a new campaign/game on Octokit .
- Choose a modern office background image (take advantage of Unsplash’s free stock photo library).
- Customize your brand colors and name the game: “First Day at Work” .
2. Character Sprite Configuration (15 minutes)
- Use the free Avatar kit ( UI Faces, Avatar Generator ) to create images for the 4 Mentors.
- Export the file as a transparent PNG image and upload it directly to Octokit.
- Creating visuals enhances interactive learning significantly compared to plain text.
3. Setting up Checkpoints & Data Entry Quiz (50 minutes)
At each endpoint, perform the setup according to the following flow:
[Add Checkpoint] ──> [Add Trigger Mentor] ──> [Interactivity Popup Series]
|
Slide 1: Intro Dialogue ──> Slides 2-4: Enter Quiz ──> Slide 5: Outro Dialogue ──> Slide 6: Award Ceremony │
- Time-saving tips: Simply copy and paste the question content directly from the old Google Form into Octokit’s quiz slides. Just mark the correct answers. It takes about 2 minutes per question!

4. Design the End Screen (15 minutes)
- Victory message: “Congratulations! You’ve conquered your first day brilliantly and officially joined the team!”
- Embed a Call to Action (CTA): The “Download Certificate” button leads to a personalized PDF certificate file (quickly designed using Canva and saved to Google Drive).
Lesson 3: Testing, Optimization & Publishing (30 minutes)
1. Practical experience test (15 minutes)
I’ll play the role of a beta tester from A to Z to discover vulnerabilities:
- Misleading question identified: Review and rephrase question Q5 for greater clarity.
- Enhancing the Emotional Payoff: Extending the Mentor 3 outro slightly to encourage players.
- Mobile UX Optimization: Adjust the font for the closing screen to avoid it being out of place on mobile interfaces.

2. Publish & Share (15 minutes)
- Publish in Unlisted mode to send to 3 colleagues for cross-testing.
- Corrected two minor spelling errors.
- Turn on Public mode and send the link to the group chat for new employees.
Results obtained after 2 weeks of implementation.
Below is a visual comparison of the effectiveness of using traditional tests versus applying game-based learning :
| Metrics | Traditional Google Form | Game Adventure (Octokit) | Level of improvement |
| Completion rate | 45% | 78% | 🚀 Increase +33% |
| Average time on task | 4 minutes | 9 minutes | ⏱️ 2.2 times faster |
| Average score | 72% | 81% | 📈 Increased by +9% |
| Level of willingness to recommend | No measurement | 87% (Survey) | |
| Voluntary response rate | ~5% | ~30% | 💬 Six times |
Professional perspective: Average scores increased from 72% to 81%. Even though the question set remains 100% the same, the reason is that when knowledge is integrated into a specific context (Narrative Context), learners will read more carefully and think more deeply before giving an answer.
4 Valuable Lessons About Gamification in Education
- The storyline doesn’t need to be complicated: The setting of “First Day at Work” is simple but sufficient to create identity and role-playing pressure for the participants.
- The dialogue is short and concise: Don’t write dialogue slides longer than three sentences. Learners want to experience and act rather than sit and read speeches.
- Micro-rewards are key: Receiving a badge of recognition after each checkpoint acts as a mild dose of dopamine, keeping players engaged throughout the entire journey.
- Certificates – Low cost, high value: A simple certificate template on Canva becomes a great motivator, encouraging learners to enthusiastically share their achievements on social media or in work groups.

Apply this model to other fields.
This quiz game creation method is not only for internal corporate training but also offers flexible expansion options:
- For Teachers/Lecturers: Transform periodic tests into an adventure of discovery. Students play the role of explorers, overcoming various “obstacles” of knowledge.
- For Event Organizers: Create short, interactive games for attendees to learn about speakers and brands and receive prizes.
- For Marketers (Brand Marketing): Transforming product quizzes into interactive game campaigns is the core strength of the Octokit Education & Marketing solution.
